F1: Colapinto Shines in The Azerbaijan GP as Accident Sidelines Checo Pérez
The Azerbaijan Grand Prix, the 17th race of the Formula 1 World Championship, delivered an unexpected result on the urban circuit of Baku. Australian Oscar Piastri (McLaren) took the victory, but the spotlight also fell on Argentine rookie Franco Colapinto (Williams), who earned an impressive eighth place in only his second race in the top category, scoring his first four points in Formula 1.
Colapinto, 21, has shown excellent performance since joining the premier class, standing out in a race marked by the circuit's toughness and incidents among the favorites. The young Argentine driver finished behind double world champion Fernando Alonso (Aston Martin), who secured sixth place, while Thai Alex Albon (Williams) finished seventh.
The most dramatic moment of the race occurred in the final laps when Mexican Sergio 'Checo' Pérez (Red Bull) and Spaniard Carlos Sainz (Ferrari), who were battling for the podium, crashed on the penultimate lap. Both drivers were forced to retire from the race, leaving the path clear for Englishman George Russell (Mercedes) to inherit third place.
Max Verstappen (Red Bull), the championship leader, had a challenging race and finished fifth, while his teammate, 'Checo' Pérez, failed to score points due to the accident. This situation allowed McLaren to take the lead in the Constructors' Championship, thanks to Piastri’s victory and Lando Norris' fourth-place finish.
The Formula 1 World Championship will continue next week in Singapore, where teams will once again face off on another challenging street circuit.
