Canelo Álvarez Deals UFC Heavy Blow, Causing Millions in Losses
Saúl "Canelo" Álvarez delivers heavy blow to UFC after Dana White's challenge on Mexican Independence Week.
On September 14, the Guadalajara boxer will face Edgar Berlanga at T-Mobile Arena in Las Vegas, Nevada, an event that will also compete with the "UFC Fight Night" gala taking place at The Sphere.
According to analyst Alan Dawson, the UFC is facing estimated losses of $20 million due to low ticket demand. High production costs for the event at The Sphere, combined with direct competition from "Canelo," are taking their toll.
Dana White expressed frustration over the lack of communication and the unilateral decision that impacted the UFC. “That was our date last year, and without even asking or talking to us, they announced the date. That’s why we’re at The Sphere,” the UFC president said, explaining the move to The Sphere.
Although it will be the first sporting event held at this venue, the high logistical costs have severely impacted the Mixed Martial Arts organization, a decision that has been harshly criticized by experts.
