Mike Tyson Says Canelo Álvarez Is “A Disgrace to Mexico” for Dodging This Fight
On a recent episode of the ‘Pound 4 Pound’ podcast with Kamaru Usman and Henry Cejudo, Tyson didn’t hold back, throwing out some spicy opinions—including a jab at Mexican champ Saúl ‘Canelo’ Álvarez. Tyson claimed that Canelo has been dodging a fight with David Benavidez, even though the WBC named Benavidez the mandatory challenger.
“Is Canelo afraid of losing, not willing to give fans the fight they want? Doesn’t he respect those Mexican champions who fought the best, no matter the money? It’s a disgrace to Mexico,” Tyson said.
Many Mexican fans and boxing fans worldwide have been calling for Álvarez to accept the challenge. Tyson’s criticism came after Canelo was asked about the potential fight between ‘Iron’ Mike and YouTuber Jake Paul. In response, Canelo went for some sarcasm.
“It’s hard to predict, it’s risky for Mike Tyson because he’s 57, 58 years old. I don’t know. Boxing isn’t a joke, but I get why they do it—it’s business. They’ll box in front of eighty thousand people.”
