Julio César Chávez Defends “Canelo” Álvarez, Says He Faces “Envy”
It's no secret that Mexico has had a number of great representatives in boxing, but few have achieved the feats accomplished by both Julio César Chávez and Saúl "Canelo" Álvarez. And it's only "gentlemanly" to acknowledge the merits of the current best "pound for pound," just as the legend has done.
Chávez has expressed regret that "Canelo" developed his successful career during a time when Mexico "is divided," noting that the criticisms aimed at the active Guadalajara fighter are merely a testament to the "envy" surrounding him.
What did Julio César Chávez say about "Canelo"?
In a conversation with the newspaper AS, "The César of Boxing" stated that Canelo Álvarez is an exemplary boxer who hasn't had anything handed to him, but has had the misfortune of excelling in a challenging environment. "Envy plays an important role. Canelo has achieved everything he has thanks to his discipline and hard work; he has both virtues and flaws. He is a fighter who has earned his place," affirmed the legend.
"We happened to live in an era where Mexico is divided: some wish for him to lose, while others support him. This, in part, allows him to earn more money. I wish I could have experienced something like that in my time," he added.
Did a rivalry exist between Julio César Chávez and "Canelo"?
While Chávez's comments about Canelo Álvarez once sparked controversy, over time, both have demonstrated mutual respect. They have allowed history to determine who is the best. However, the Sonoran fighter often highlights his impressive record of 89 undefeated fights and 29 title defenses.
