David Benavidez Seeks to Challenge 'Canelo' Alvarez
David Benavidez, an American boxer of Mexican and Ecuadorian descent, managed to become the interim WBC light heavyweight champion after defeating Oleksandr Gvozdyk by unanimous decision.
The judges' scorecards read 119-109, 117-111, and 116-112 in favor of the American boxer, who not only won the championship but also increased his record to 29-0. "The Mexican Monster," as Benavidez is nicknamed, made his debut in the light heavyweight category.
Gvozdyk lost the title to a boxer 10 years younger than him, who dominated the fight and had a particular motivation: to face Saúl "Canelo" Álvarez. Benavidez had repeatedly tried to challenge the Mexican boxer but had been denied the opportunities.
Benavidez revealed that during his training camp for this fight, he suffered a cut over his left eye and entered the ring with a torn tendon in his right hand.
Although Benavidez won the interim light heavyweight title, his challenge against "Canelo" will have to wait, as he still has to face challenges in his new weight division.
