Travis Kelce and His Worst Season Start with the Chiefs
Travis Kelce, star tight end for the Kansas City Chiefs and boyfriend of pop star Taylor Swift, acknowledged on Friday that he feels a sense of urgency to improve following what has been the worst start to his career with the team.
"There’s a sense of urgency all week to do things right for the next game, but at the same time, I realized that the ball can’t always go to one person, and it can’t always, you know, get into my hands," the tight end said in a press conference.
Despite the Chiefs being unbeaten, Kelce is posting the worst numbers since 2014, his first season as a starter with the team. Through three games, he has only caught eight passes for 69 yards, and he has just one rushing yard. He has yet to score, which he explained does not concern him too much as long as the team functions well and remains undefeated.
"Obviously, we want to put our best version out there; we want to win every game we can. We all have the goal of continuing to improve throughout the season. That’s the mentality we need to have," he stated.
Kelce has faced criticism for his social life since starting his relationship with Taylor Swift last year. He has been seen at various events with the singer, which has led to questions about his performance on the field, something he dismissed.
"Stats might say something different, but I’m the same person within this organization. That’s all that really matters. I care. I’m my own worst critic. Everything outside this building is just noise," emphasized the three-time Super Bowl champion with Kansas City.
The 34-year-old veteran highlighted Patrick Mahomes’ performance, noting that it has become increasingly difficult to maintain the level that led them to four of the last five Super Bowls.
"With the pieces we have, teams are playing us a bit differently than they did last year. Patrick is playing differently than last season; we’re playing a bit smoother but still advancing. Patrick is doing a great job putting the ball in everyone’s hands," he concluded.
Next Sunday, the Chiefs will visit the Los Angeles Chargers for Week 4 of the season.
