Tom Brady to the Miami Dolphins as Tua Tagovailoa’s Replacement? It Would Be Crazy...
"Anything is possible, as long as I'm 'in shape' and 'capable,'" this was the response of the legendary Tom Brady when asked about five months ago if he was considering returning to the NFL. And now, with a vacant quarterback spot at the Miami Dolphins, it’s fair to say a man with his experience wouldn’t be a bad fit for the organization.
After witnessing the latest concussion suffered by Tua Tagovailoa during the Dolphins’ game against the Buffalo Bills, the quarterback position on the team is open. But how likely is it to see Brady return to the field?
On the Deep Cuts podcast, while getting his hair cut, the iconic quarterback discussed the possibility of playing again.
"I'm not opposed. I don’t know if they’d let me if I become an owner of an NFL team, but I don’t know if… I don’t know. I’ll always be in good shape, I’ll always be able to throw the ball. So, coming in for a bit, like M.J. (Michael Jordan) did? I don’t know if they’d let me, but I wouldn’t be opposed to it," said the multiple-time Super Bowl champion.
Unfortunately for the Dolphins, the former player, now an NFL analyst, mentioned three teams he would say "yes" to: the Raiders, San Francisco 49ers, and New England Patriots.
What’s Stopping Tom Brady’s NFL Return?
A hypothetical return of Tom Brady to the NFL depended on one of the three teams mentioned losing their quarterback (something that did happen with the Miami Dolphins), and the other hurdle would be getting permission from the rest of the league’s owners. Although, it’s hard to imagine anyone opposing a comeback from what many consider the greatest quarterback of all time.
A "Last Dance" for Brady at age 47 sounds like a crazy idea, but we know his competitiveness could push him toward it. Why not help a franchise that’s been struggling since their glory days with Dan Marino?
Another obstacle to Brady suiting up again is that he’s currently in the process of being approved as a minority owner of the Raiders. It would be unusual to see an "owner" playing quarterback for another franchise, especially within the same conference.
NFL Commissioner Roger Goodell was asked about the approval process for Tom Brady to become a minority owner in the league. He stated that it was "on the right track" and not "delayed."
Meanwhile, the future Hall of Famer awaits approval from at least 24 of the 32 owners to greenlight his bid for a 10% stake in the Raiders (something that hasn’t happened yet). For now, his role in football is limited to being behind the microphone as an analyst, thanks to a $375 million deal he signed with Fox Sports for the next 10 years.
Dolphins Seek Replacement for Tua
Mike McDaniel, head coach of the Miami Dolphins, announced that the team will be signing another quarterback to replace Tua Tagovailoa.
"I don’t see how Tua plays the next game. We’re bringing someone in; we’re just weighing the pros and cons of different situations. For now, Skylar Thompson remains next in line to play," McDaniel said.
The head coach also expressed the team’s concern for Tagovailoa as a person, beyond his recovery to return to the field.
"I don’t think it’s appropriate to discuss what should happen with his career. I think it’s fair that he decides his own career. I understand people want to get to that point, but I just want people to hear what I’m saying; talking about his future isn’t what’s best for him due to the anxiety it could create," the coach emphasized.
