The Injury That Will Sideline Deshaun Watson for Almost a Year
Deshaun Watson, quarterback for the Cleveland Browns, is set to miss the rest of the 2024 season due to a torn Achilles tendon in his right leg, as reported by NFL Network.
The injury was confirmed after Watson underwent an MRI earlier in the day. He got hurt during the second quarter of the Browns' Week 7 matchup against the Cincinnati Bengals, a game Cleveland lost.
It happened when Watson, unable to find any open receivers, tried to run but collapsed after failing to put weight on his right leg. As soon as he hit the ground, he grabbed his ankle and was eventually carted off the field. The 29-year-old QB is in his third season with Cleveland, having signed a five-year contract worth $230 million.
During his time with the Houston Texans from 2017 to 2020, Watson was known for his speed on the ground and his ability to move in the pocket, extending plays to find his receivers. These skills led to standout seasons, like in 2018 when he threw for 4,165 yards and 26 touchdowns, and in 2020, with 4,283 yards and 33 touchdown passes.
However, he hasn’t been able to replicate that form with the Browns. In 2022, he played only six games due to a suspension, racking up 1,102 yards and seven touchdowns. Last year, he was limited to six games because of a shoulder injury that required surgery, managing 1,115 yards and seven TDs.
In seven games this season, he’s recorded 1,148 yards and five touchdowns. Watson leaves the Browns with a 1-6 record, at the bottom of the AFC North.
