Chiefs and Taylor Swift's Super Bowl Sets Record for Most-Watched TV Broadcast in the U.S.
The recent Super Bowl, won by the Kansas City Chiefs with Taylor Swift as a star in the stands, set a new record for a U.S. television broadcast with an audience of 123.4 million viewers. This surpasses the previous record held by last year's Super Bowl, where the Chiefs also emerged victorious against the Philadelphia Eagles, attracting 115.1 million viewers.
The 2024 Super Bowl would only be surpassed in U.S. history by the Apollo 11 moon landing in 1969, estimated to have had an audience of between 125 and 150 million people. However, it's important to note that the Apollo 11 landing was broadcast on various channels, making a precise comparison with the exclusively CBS-aired 2024 Super Bowl less accurate.
Nielsen Fast National and Adobe Analytics data, released by the NFL, indicated that 120 million people watched the game on CBS, while the remaining viewers watched through Paramount+, Nickelodeon, Univisión, CBS Sports, and NFL+. Notably, the 2.2 million viewers on Univisión set a new record for a Spanish-language Super Bowl broadcast.
The Allegiant Stadium in Las Vegas witnessed the second consecutive title for the Patrick Mahomes-led Chiefs, securing their third ring in the last five years. The game, decided in overtime, was also notable for the presence of Taylor Swift in the audience, celebrating the victory with her boyfriend, Travis Kelce, a Chiefs player.
Swift and Kelce's high-profile romance has been a major storyline in the NFL this season, with cameras and fans frequently capturing the singer cheering for her boyfriend in the stands.
Usher headlined the halftime show, featuring special guests Alicia Keys, H.E.R., Ludacris, Lil Jon, and will.i.am.
Regarding commercials, the exclusive rate for a 30-second spot during the Super Bowl was seven million dollars. Lionel Messi, Beyoncé, Jennifer López, Ben Affleck, and Arnold Schwarzenegger were among the prominent stars featured in the commercials.
