Kompany tells Bayern to relish potential Man City meeting
The possibility of facing Manchester City should not overly concern Bayern Munich, according to coach Vincent Kompany.
Vincent Kompany wants his Bayern Munich side to be ready to attack "big games" in the next round of the Champions League as they potentially face Manchester City.
Both Bayern and Kompany's former club City would have expected to finish in the top eight and avoid the play-off round.
But the two sides could now be paired in a battle to reach the last 16 after faltering league-phase campaigns.
Bayern at least ensured they will be seeded in Friday's draw after beating Slovan Bratislava 3-1 on Wednesday, but their reward will be either City or Celtic.
That is a daunting prospect, but Kompany said: "Now we have to restore this energy to be hot for those games.
"Now City, as well as Celtic, enter these knock-out matches with a good feeling, and we need to have that as well.
"We have to build our energy. We have to switch to the mentality of looking forward to these big games. You get to the stage of a competition where you expect big games."
Even if Bayern do face City, they will at least know their fate is in their own hands.
Victory over Slovan was not enough to finish in the top eight due to results elsewhere, a situation that frustration Kompany.
"Despite the win today, the joy is not the same," he said. "Today we did not have a lot of things in our control regarding the situation but from tomorrow we will have again.
"We now have to switch the mentality to be fully energised for these games."
