Atalanta saw off Bologna 2-0 to move into third in Serie A, with Mateo Retegui playing a crucial role.

Gian Piero Gasperini's team raced into a two-goal lead inside 21 minutes at Gewiss Stadium on Sunday.

Serie A's leading scorer Retegui was on target inside three minutes, turning in from Raoul Bellanova's right-wing centre.

That was Atalanta's first goal in four matches, and took Retegui's tally to 23 league goals for the season.

Retegui then turned provider as he shrugged off the challenge of Jhon Lucumi and crossed in for Mario Pasalic to fire home.

Those goals were Atalanta's only shots on target, with the hosts managing just four attempts overall, but Bologna - who started the day just a point behind their hosts - were unable to find a way back into it.

Retegui has now been involved in 28 league goals this season, having scored 23 and assisted five.

Only Mohamed Salah (44), Harry Kane (30) and Omar Marmoush (30) have contributed to more goals in Europe's top five leagues in 2024-25.

His opener was his fastest Serie A goal, while only Filippo Inzaghi (24 in 1996-97) has netted more times in a single top-flight season for Atalanta than Retegui, who has now equalled Duvan Zapata's tally of 23 from 2018-19.

Despite only having four shots, Atalanta registered 1.14 expected goals to Bologna's 0.59 from 12 attempts.
