Espanyol moved to within a point of its opponent Getafe on the LaLiga standings thanks to a 1-0 win at home that moved it up to 12th place.
Marash Kumbulla scored the only goal of the game in the 39th minute, firing into the top corner with a precise strike after Getafe had failed to clear from a corner.
The visitors were later reduced to 10 men when Christantus Uche was shown red for dangerous tackle on Jofre Carreras on the hour mark, and the misery was compounded when Walid Cheddira saw an equaliser in stoppage-time chalked off for a very tight offside.
