Preview: Aston Villa vs PSG | LIVE on beIN SPORTS!
Aston Villa welcome Paris Saint-German to a packed Villa Park on Tuesday night for the Champions League second leg of their quarter-final.
The French champions arrive in England with a 3-1 lead from the first leg, but Unai Emery’s side have shown enough throughout the competition to suggest this tie isn’t over.
It’s Villa’s biggest European night in decades, and the atmosphere is expected to reflect that. Fans believe a comeback is possible, not just because of the stakes but because of how this team has responded at home all season. Villa are unbeaten in their last 17 matches at Villa Park, and they have scored at least two goals in seven of their last eight home games.
Villa got off to the dream start in the first leg in Paris. Morgan Rogers opened the scoring with a smart finish at the back-post after a delightful ball across goal from Youri Tielemans, but PSG dictated much of the play throughout. Goals from Desire Doue and Khvicha Kvaratskheilia tilted the game in their favour, and a stoppage-time strike from Nuno Mendes extended the first leg lead to 3-1. It was a tough ending for Emery’s side, who had put in a commendable showing for large parts of the night.
Still, Villa bounced back in the Premier League. They cruised to a 3-0 win away at Southampton over the weekend with second-half goals from Ollie Watkins, John McGinn and Donyell Malen. Watkins, who came off the bench in the first leg, could make a return to the starting XI.
Emery is expected to rotate back to his first-choice lineup. That means starts for Pau Torres, Lucas Digne and Boubacar Kamara, all of whom were left out from the start on Saturday. Leon Bailey is the only injury doubt for the Villans.
PSG, on the other hand, come into the second leg fully rested. With the Ligue 1 title already secured, Luis Enrique’s side had the weekend off to prepare. They are unbeaten in 16 straight away games across all competitions, including wins at hostile grounds such as Anfield and the Allianz Arena.
Ousmane Dembele is at the top of his game, registering 41 goal contributions in 42 matches this season. He, along with Kvaratskheilia and Doue, make PSG one of the most dangerous counter-attacking sides in Europe right now. If Villa leave space in behind while chasing the game, the French side will certainly look to exploit it.
Marquinhos returns from suspension and is likely to replace Lucas Beraldo at the back. Vitinha was exceptional in midfield during the first leg, completing 148 passes - the most by any PSG player in Champions League history.
Villa need two goals without reply to force extra time, three to go through outright. It’s a huge task, but one Emery and his players will believe is possible - especially at home.
