Van Dijk backs Liverpool hierarchy ahead of 'big summer'
Virgil van Dijk is reportedly close to staying at Liverpool, which the defender has backed to get key decisions right this summer.
The Reds are charging towards the Premier League title, and need a maximum of six points to get over the line after its win over West Ham.
Van Dijk scored the winner against the Hammers, and is reportedly close to signing a new deal at Anfield, with his contract set to expire at the end of the season.
The 33 year-old, who has scored more Premier League goals than any other centre-back since his debut in the competition in September 2015, is set to join Mohamed Salah in staying put, though full-back Trent Alexander-Arnold appears destined to leave on a free transfer.
There is also uncertainty over the future of Darwin Nunez, who has struggled to find consistency since his big-money switch from Benfica in 2022, while Andrew Robertson has endured a difficult run of form, and Arne Slot's team may be busy in the transfer market.
"Whatever happens in terms of players going out, players coming in, I think it should be a big summer," Van Dijk said, as quoted by ESPN.
"I think they're planning to make it a big summer, so we all have to trust the board, as a Liverpool fan, to do the right job."
Van Dijk, though, is confident Liverpool will still be challenging on multiple fronts next season.
"I think Liverpool should be able to challenge for titles in the upcoming years," he said.
When asked about his future, Van Dijk replied: "Let's see how this week goes.
"I think first, all the focus should be going to the Hillsborough anniversary. I mentioned it already in interviews, I think that's the main thing and then we'll see.
"The focus will still be on Leicester [who Liverpool are playing next week], but maybe there's some news. I don't know. I know, but I don't know.
"I joined the club in 2017 for many reasons. Being successful with Liverpool; the culture of the club, everything that embodies Liverpool that is just part of me.
"That's why I'm always proud when I wear that shirt, go out there and try to be the best version of myself in terms of the football player that I am. We are two wins, six points away from glory.
"I know what it means to the club and I know what it will bring us if it happens. Most of the players don't so when it happens, it will be beautiful but we still have a job to do."
