Oxford United promotion ends 25-year wait
Oxford United beat Bolton Wanderers in the EFL League One Play-Off final at Wembley, the 2-0 victory sealing promotion to the Championship, where it has not been since 1999.
Josh Murphy was the hero for the Yellows, scoring twice in the first half and coming close to a hat-trick with a number of chances in the second half as Bolton struggled throughout, failing to put a shot on target across the 90 minutes.
Bolton finished third behind promoted League One champion Portsmouth and second-placed Derby County across the 46 matches of the regular season, but was pushed to the limit by Barnsley in its play-off semi-final, winn 5-4 on aggregate after a 3-2 defeat in the second leg.
The confidence that took away from the side was clear as Oxford, which finished fifth before seeing off Peterborough in its play-off final, saw out a relatively easy win to seal promotion.
