Villarreal wins on the road to stay in third
Villarreal left it late to win 2-1 at Valladolid and keep its position behind leader Barcelona and second-placed Real Madrid ahead of El Clasico.
Madrid's defeat to Barcelona means Marcelino's side is just three points behind Los Blancos, and the victory was more than deserved against a Valladolid side that now languishes one spot off the bottom of the table after Las Palmas shocked Girona to move out of the bottom three.
Thierno Barry was the first on the scoresheet for the visitors, a glancing header finding the back of the net in the 29th minute.
But a foul on Mamadou Sylla in the box by Logan Costa, which some might have deemed a harsh call, allowed the hosts to level from the spot, Sylla scoring the penalty he'd won.
Villarreal, though, pushed on and after hiting the frame of the goal a couple of time finally broke through again six minutes from time when another head, this time from Ayoze Perez, hit the back of the net and handed his side all three points.
