Sucic stunner rescues draw as Atleti drops points
A stunning late goal from Luka Sucic saw Real Sociedad take a point from Atletico Madrid after Diego Simeone's side had gone ahead in the first minute of their LaLiga clash.
Sucic fired an exquisite curling shot from outside the box after Rodrigo de Paul had coughed up possession cheaply, leaving Atleti goalkeeper Jan Oblak clutching at thin air as he dived to the top left corner of his goal to no avail.
It was the least La Real deserved after responding well to going behind to Julian Alvarez's goal so early.
Imanol Alguacil's side fired 16 shots to Atletico's four, seven of them on target, with Sucic's the best of them as the hosts picked up a third draw of the campaign.
Atletico, meanwhile, lost ground on Real Madrid and Barcelona, both of which won their games against Villarreal and Alaves respectively. Simeone's side is now seven points adrift of Barca at the top, and four behind city rival Madrid.
Things had started so brightly for the visitors, though, with Antoine Griezmann providing a delightful backheel assist for Alvarez's opener after just 50 seconds.
But Sociedad took control of the match thereafter, and Takefusa Kubo forced Oblak into a sharo save on 42 minutes as the hosts went into the break looking the more likely to score the next goal.
Kubo had another excellent chance to equalise just after the restart, but blasted wide, and it might have proved costly had Nahuel Molina buried another superb assist from Griezmann just before the hour mark.
As it turned out, it was Molina's miss that proved the more crucial as Sucic fired home his astonishing equaliser with just six minutes remaining, and Kubo might have sealed all three points for La Real in the first minute of stoppage-time, but his shot whistled inches over the bar.
The point leaves Sociedad in 15th on the table, while Atletico will spend the international break in third.
