Mayhem in Madrid as derby ends all square
A chaotic and ill-tempered Madrid derby ended all square as Atletico Madrid equalised in stoppage-time to secure a point in a 1-1 draw with Real Madrid in LaLiga.
Angel Correa scored in the fifth minute of time added on after Eder Militao had given the visitors a 64th minute lead, his goal sparking fury from the home fans, whose behaviour led to a postponement in the game for around 20 minutes.
Marcos Llorente was also sent off for a late challenge as the match ended all square, with neither side able to take full advantage of Barcelona's shock defeat to Osasuna 24 hours earlier and apply some pressure to the league leader.
The first half saw few chances from either side, although Thibaut Courtois and Jan Oblak were both forced into a couple of sharp saves.
But just after the hour mark, that all changed when Vinicius Junior put over a cross from the left that fell at the feet of Militao, and he smashed the opener past Oblak.
Courtois celebrated hard in front of the home fans at the other end of the field, the majority of whom took exception to their former goalkeeper's antics and began to throw projectiles on to the pitch.
That led to the referee intervening and calling the players off the field of play while Atleti's stars and coach, Diego Simeone, went to plead with their faithful to calm things down or risk a suspension of the game or worse.
The players did eventually re-emerge to finish the match, and it was Atleti that did so the stronger.
Correa had a chance saved at the near post late on, but made no mistake after collecting a perfectly-timed throughball from Javi Galan deep into stoppage-time, holding off Militao and just managing to keep control of the ball after going around Courtois to score.
The result means both sides earn a point each, Atleti now third on 16 points while Madrid is in second on 18.
But Barcelona remains top with 21 points, despite losing for the first time this season.
