Martinez fires Alaves to unlikely win at Sociedad
Toni Martinez was the hero for Alaves as he came off the bench to score the winner in a 2-1 upset of Real Sociedad, claiming his side's first win of the new LaLiga season in the process.
Martinez came on in the 70th minute and struck in the 77th as Sociedad ran out of steam having played with 10 men for more than an hour of the contest.
It was Spain striker Mikel Oyarzabal that saw red after a first half tackle was reviewed by VAR and spotted his studs buried in the calf of Carlos Benavidez, although the challenge looked far from deliberate.
Despite his dismissal, it was Sociedad that went ahead barely two minutes later when Brais Mendez scored for the home side.
But the home crowd was fuming at the official again in stoppage-time at the end of the first half when Alaves was awarded a penalty, which Asier Villlaibre easily slotted home.
As the second half wore on, it seemed a draw might be the most likely result, but up popped Martinez to score the winner, which was celebrated wildly by the visitors.
