Atletico drops more points in LaLiga title race
LaLiga title challenger Atletico Madrid came from behind but was made to settle for a point in a 1-1 draw against Villarreal as Samuel Lino's close-range effort in the second-half cancelled out Gerard Moreno's opener.
Atletico dominated proceedings throughout the match but it was the visiting side that got the lead in the 29th minute, with Moreno striking from the penalty spot after he was fouled from behind inside the box.
Atletico equalised after a spell of pressure in the 58th minute when Lino tapped home a rebound by the goalkeeper, who failed to hold on to an Angel Correa strike from close range.
Winless in its past two league games after going through a remarkable 15-game winning run in all competitions, Diego Simeone's side has lost the LaLiga lead to Real Madrid, which is top on 46 points.
Behind Atletico is Barcelona and Athletic Bilbao, level on 39 points.
Villarreal is fifth on 34 and has now collected points in eight of its past 11 away games against Atletico Madrid in LaLiga, having lost in eight of the previous 12 visits.
Simeone's side may now second in the standings, but the Atletico boss was pleased with his team's display despite failing to take its chances.
"I think we were pretty much in control throughout the game. We played with the right attitude and commitment, aiming to win the game," Simeone said.
"The first half went quite well. They had the penalty and little more.
"In the second half we played against a team that defended well, with a lot of players and in an organised manner, waiting to counter-attack because they have a lot of fast players, and they take advantage of that speed.
"We found an equaliser, and we continued to play the way we wanted to, going forward. We had more than one situation where we could have won the game. But it wasn't to be..."
Simeone's attention now turns to the UEFA Champions League, with Atleti's final game of the league phase coming against Red Bull Salzburg next week, with the hopes of cementing a place in the automatic qualifying places for the knockout stages.
