Alaves moves up after win over Sevilla
Goals from Carlos Vicente and Carlos Martin secured a well-deserved win for Alaves as it beat Sevilla 2-1 in LaLiga.
Vicente scored with the hosts' first attempt of the match, firing past Orjan Nyland from a tight angle in the 17th minute, the Norwegian goalkeeper making a hash of his attempt to save.
Alaves looked to have doubled its lead when Stoichkov nudged the ball in at the far post in the 23rd minute, but while it was confirmed the ball had crossed the line, the goal was eventually ruled out for an offside in the build-up.
On the hour mark, Alaves would go further ahead, but not before Sevilla had threatened an equaliser, Saul's shot saved at close quarters by Antonio Sivera.
Play moved swiftly to the other end of the field, and Stoichkov was again denied his first goal for the club when his header bounced back off the bar. But Martin was in the right place at the right time to deflect it back into the goal off his hip for 2-0.
Belgium star Dodi Lukebakio pulled one back for Sevilla with three minutes to go – his curling finish was arguably the pick of the goals – but it was too little too late as Alaves moved up to fifth on the ladder with 10 points, while Sevilla is languishing in 14th with just one win and five points from six matches so far.
