Alaves beats Mallorca to snap losing streak
Alaves ended a run of five straight league defeats with a hard-fought 1-0 win over Mallorca in LaLiga.
Jon Guridi scored the winning goal on 76 minutes, finally breaking the deadlock in what was an attritional affair.
Both sides paused for a minute's silence before kick-off in memory of the now more than 200 people killed in the devastating floods in the Valencia region, where many also still remain missing.
Football seemed secondary under such circumstances, and there was little goalmouth action to speak of in the first half, with both sides stuggling to exert any dominance.
Alaves created the bulk of the chances throughout the game, however, and arguably deserved the victory that lifted it clear of the relegation zone into 12th place on 13 points.
For Mallorca, it was a third league match without a win and leaves it seventh on the table with 18 points ahead of the weekend's remaining fixtures, which have been reduced as a result of the emergency situation elsewhere in the country.
