New Everton era begins with Posh takedown
Everton began life after Sean Dyche with a 2-0 victory over Peterborough United to book its place in the FA Cup fourth round.
The Toffees parted company with Dyche earlier on Friday after just under two years in charge at Goodison Park. The former Burnley boss had paid the price following a run of just one win in 10 matches.
Leighton Baines and Seamus Coleman were placed in temporary charge for the visit of League One side Peterborough, and they guided the Toffees to a comfortable triumph.
Everton broke the deadlock three minutes before half-time, as Beto latched onto Harrison Armstrong's throughball before rounding visiting goalkeeper Nicholas Bilokapic to finish.
Iliman Ndiaye sealed the victory from the penalty spot in second-half stoppage time, making no mistake after Jadel Katongo had fouled Jarrad Branthwaite in the box.
Everton has won its last 10 FA Cup home games against sides from a lower division, keeping seven clean sheets in that time.
Baines and club captain Seamus Coleman were placed in temporary charge for the game, and Baines praised his side after the game.
"It was a unique day in a lot of ways, but a nice moment for myself and Seamus and the players as well," Baines said.
"It being a winning one is definitely a nice moment. The management side is not something I have been striving for, but the opportunity arrived today to help out in the situation where the club needed someone, and I was more than happy to help out.
"The outcome of winning a game is always a positive one. The lads get to stay in the draw in a cup competition we are all desperate to be part of.
"The lads played well. You could see the commitment. They wanted to give the stadium and fans something they would enjoy watching. For the most part, the performance was positive.
"It has not been that difficult. This is what we do. Players play football and coaches coach. It was just a little different today. It is never nice when a manager loses his job, but then everyone had to get on with their jobs as well.
"I am not too sure about that [what is next for the club] right now. Things moved so quickly today. I have definitely not had time to think about what comes next."
Everton will be joined in the fourth-round draw by fellow Premier League side Fulham, which eased to a 4-1 win over EFL Championship side Watford at Craven Cottage.
The sides went in level at half-time, after Rocco Vata's 30-yard strike cancelled out Rodrigo Muniz's opener just six minutes earlier.
However, the hosts took control after the break. Raul Jimenez continued his rich vein of form with a penalty after Adama Traore had been fouled in the box by Antonio Tikvic.
Joachim Andersen put the Cottagers further in front just after the hour mark before Timothy Castagne rounded off the scoring to see Marco Silva's side safely through.
Fulham scored four goals in an FA Cup match for the first time since January 2017, and will be hoping to improve on its quarter-final run in the competition two seasons ago.
Meanwhile, struggling Cardiff City edged out promotion hopeful Sheffield United 1-0 in the all-EFL Championship battle at Bramall Lane.
Cian Ashford scored the only goal after just 19 minutes at Bramall Lane, where the Bluebirds upset the form book by denying their promotion-chasing opponents.
At 20 years and 107 days, Ashford became the youngest player to score for Cardiff in the FA Cup since Rubin Colwill against Liverpool in February 2022 (19 years 285 days).
