Quito lifts Copa Sudamericana after shootout drama
Ecuador's Liga de Quito was crowned the new champion of the Copa Sudamericana, defeating Brazil's Fortaleza 4-3 in a dramatic penalty shootout.
An impressive performance by Alexander Domínguez in the shootout allowed Luis Zubeldía's team to regain a title it had previously won in the 2009 season after both sides were locked at 1-1 having played 90 minutes and 30 minutes more of extra-time.
The goalkeeper stopped three spot kicks and was the standout player in the match held at Domingo Burgueno Miguel Stadium in the Uruguayan city of Punta del Este.
In the initial 90 minutes, a stunning goal by Argentine Lisandro Alzugaray kept the hopes of the Ecuadorian side alive after it had fallen behind to another Argentine, Juan Martín Lucero, opening the scoring for Brazil's Fortaleza.
But there few other chances for either side to break the deadlock, leading to an inevitable shootout, where Quito held its nerve to claim the trophy.
