Velez teens stun Penarol in Copa Lib comeback
Velez Starsfield came from a goal down in the final 10 minutes of its Copa Libertadores group stage opener to beat Penarol 2-1 thanks to two teenagers in its ranks.
After a goalless first half, Leonardo Fenandez had put Penarol ahead three minutes into the second half, converting a cross with a crisp first-time strike from inside the box.
But the visitors were left stunned when Maher Mauricio Carrizo fired home a similarly sharp first-time cracker on the 80th minutes to level matters, the 18-year-old timing his shot perfectly.
In the fifth minute of stoppage-time, Penarol conceded a free-kick on the edge of the box.
The initial effort was saved by Martín Campana, but 17-year-old Alvaro Montoro, who will celebrate his 18th birthday in a fortnight, was quickest to the rebound and fired past the Penarol keeper to clinch all three points for his side.
