Botafogo dealt damaging defeat after howler
Defending Copa Libertadores champion Botafogo is in danger of not qualifying for the knockout stages at the halfway stage of the group phase, sitting third in Group A after a goalkeeping howler gifted Estudiantes a 1-0 victory in La Plata.
Botafogo goalkeeper John made a complete hash of a speculative effort from Guido Carillo, somehow letting it through his grasp and into the back of the net in the 38th minute.
Defeat leaves Botafogo with just three points after managing only one win from its three games so far, while Estudiantes is up to second with two wins and six points.
Universidad de Chile leads the standings with seven points after two wins and its draw with bottom side Carabobo on Wednesday (AEST).
