Rooney's Plymouth hands Luton another big loss
Plymouth Argyle brought Luton Town back down to Earth with a thumping 3-1 victory at Home Park, registering the second win of Wayne Rooney's tenure in fine style.
Luton arrived on the back of two straight victories in the EFL Championship – against Millwall and Sheffield Wednesday – but just when Rob Edwards thought his relegated side might be back on course for a tilt at a Premier League return, Rooney's men ruined his mood.
Rami Al-Hajj got the hosts off the mark quickly, firing a precise shot into the top corner to put Plymouth in front after only eight minutes.
The hosts continued to dominate the first period and Luton was thankful for an inspired display from goalkeeper Thomas Kaminski as he kept the score 1-0 until the break.
Elijah Adebayo had a great chance to pull the Hatters level on 54 minutes, but headed over the bar from the edge of the six-yard box, and he spurned another chance on 66 minutes from close range, Daniel Grimshaw turning his shot behind for a corner at his near post.
Jordan Clark was next to threaten inside the Plymouth box, but he was brilliantly dispossessed in full flight and from the resulting counter-attack, the hosts would double their lead, Ibrahim Cissoko finishing a flowing move with a powerful finish past Kaminski from inside the box.
Victor Moses blasted home a similarly impressive finish almost straight from the restart to give Luton a glimmer of hope, but Cissoko produced another piece of magic to grab his second in the third minute of stoppage-time to wrap up all three points.
Victory moved Plymouth up the table into 13th, leapfrogging Luton in 16th as Edwards continues to look for answers and some consistency from his team.
