Newcastle eases into Carabao Cup fourth round
Newcastle United booked a place in the fourth round of the Carabao Cup with a 1-0 win over AFC Wimbledon.
The Premier League Magpies edged past their League Two opposition in the tie, which was due to take place at the Cherry Red Records Stadium before being rearranged at St. James’ Park due to extensive flooding.
The deadlock was broken on the stroke of half-time when the host took the lead from the spot. Newcastle’s Miguel Almiron was brought down inside the box by Joe Pigott and referee Darren Bond awarded a penalty.
Magpies defender Fabian Schar kept his cool from 12 yards to dispatch the spot-kick as the home team took a slender 1-0 advantage into the break.
The 32 year-old’s effort proved to be the only goal of the game. The two teams played out a goalless second half as Newcastle became the final team to advance to the last 16 of the competition.
Eddie Howe’s side will entertain league rival Chelsea in Round Four with the tie pencilled for Wednesday 30 October after the draw for the next stage of the competition was made last week.
