Bree's banger wins eight-goal thriller for Saints
James Bree scored only the third goal of his senior career, but he'll likely never hit a better one, as Southampton won a Carabao Cup tie littered with spectacular strikes 5-3 in stoppage-time at Cardiff City.
Bree's volley from the edge of the box was the perfect strike and came with the scores level at 3-3 going into five minutes of stoppage-time in this second round clash.
Cameron Archer netted his second of the match to add gloss to the scoreline a few minutes later, but it was Bree's banger that finished the challenge of a plucky Cardiff City outfit.
Southampton has yet to win in the Premier League after two matches, but the signs were good early on when Matues Fernandes put the Saints in the lead after only 10 minutes with his first goal since arriving from FC Porto.
But Rubin Colwill scored the first stunner of the evening on 21 minutes when he blasted home off the underside of the crossbar from distance to level the scores.
Sam Amo-Ameyaw had Southampton ahead again on the half-hour mark, finishing an intricate passing move that included two backheels before his crisp strike flew into the Cardiff net.
But the Bluebirds were level again soon after the break thanks to a clumsy own-goal by Southampton.
Archer netted his first in the 55th minute to grab the lead again for the visitors, but they switched off from the restart and allowed Cardiff to equalise once more courtesy of brilliant volley from Alex Robertson on 57 minutes.
Amazingly there were to be no more goals until Bree lashed home what looked like the final rocket of the contest in the 91st minute on an absorbing contest.
And there was still time for Archer to complete his brace and cement Southampton's place in the third round, where a meeting at Premier League peer Everton awaits at Goodison Park.
