Leverkusen loses to Leipzig as remarkable run ends
Bayer Leverkusen suffered its first defeat in 36 Bundesliga matches as Leipzig came from two goals down to stun Xabi Alonso's side 3-2 at BayArena.
Lois Openda struck twice for Marco Rose's side, which made it two wins from two and moved to top of the table as a result despite the coach being sent to the stands for protests towards the officials.
It looked like business as usual for the reigning Bundesliga champion when it scored twice in the last seven minutes of the first half.
Jeremie Frimpong tucked away the first from close range before Alejandro Grimaldo doubled the lead.
Victor Boniface squandered a brilliant chance to make it 3-0, and that might could have been the difference as Leipzig replied deep into first-half stoppage-time through a Kevin Kampl diving header to reduce the deficit and go into the break feeling more positive.
Openda then brought the visitors level in the 57th minute, before a stunning long-range strike completed the turnaround 10 minutes from time, condemning Leverkusen to its first league defeat in 15 months.
Leipzig became the first side to beat Leverkusen in a Bundesliga match since Bochum achieved the feat a staggering 462 days earlier.
Leipzig is also now unbeaten in 13 league matches, its longest such streak since Rose took charge.
As for Leverkusen, its invincible streak is officially history, as is its 29-game unbeaten run on home soil.
