Irvine's St Pauli beaten in Bundesliga opener
It was a tough welcome to the Bundesliga for Australians Jackson Irvine and Connor Metcalfe as their newly-promoted St Pauli side was beaten 2-0 at home by Heidenheim in their opening league match.
Metcalfe had the first chance for the home side, but fired wide, and that became the main issue for the hosts as they wasted a string of chances to go ahead in the match.
That wastefulness came back to bite in the second half when Paul Wanner put the visitors in front on 66 minutes and eight minutes from time Jan Schoppner doubled the lead to leave St Pauli frustrated and with work to do if it's to survive in Germany's top flight.
