Schalke blows three-goal lead against Darmstadt
Schalke's poor start to the season in 2. Bundesliga continued after it threw away a three-goal lead against Darmstadt to lose 5-3 at home.
The hosts appeared to be cruising after 40 minutes, leading 3-0 thanks to goals from Tobias Mohr, Moussa Sylla and Ron Schallenberg.
But Schalke conceded a penalty for handball in the fifth minute of added time at the end of the first half, and Fraser Hornby converted from the spot to lift the visitors at the break.
Barely 10 minutes had passed in the second half when Isac Lidberg scored the first goal of what would be a hat-trick and panic set in for Schalke.
Lidberg levelled on 75 minutes with a curling right-foot finish and with three minutes to go, he completed his treblenodding to put Darmstadt in the lead for the first time in the match.
Sergio Lopez added insult to injury for the hosts when he put a fifth past Schalke keeper Justin Heekeren to seal the comeback.
