Five-star Morocco thrashes Gabon in qualifier
Morocco was in no mood to go easy on Gabon in their Africa Cup of Nations qualifying clashwinning 5-1 despite going behind early at Stade de Franceville.
With both sides already qualified for next year's finals, it was unclear what to expect from this Group B match, but it started with a bang when Denis Bougana put the hosts ahead with a superb curling strike from distance in the fourth minute.
Gabon had more than enough chances to extend its lead, Pierre Emerick-Aubameyang rounding the goalkeeper to score before having his effort disallowed for a close offside in the ninth minute after a slick counter-attack.
But Morocco exposed Gabon's weakness for defending set-pieces soon after.
Jamal Harkass headed home a free-kick delivery from Achraf Hakimi to level matters on 17 minutes before Brahim Diaz scored two goals in three minutes, poking home from close range on both occasions as Gabon's defence failed to deal with two corners from either side of its goal.
It was Ismael Saibari that lit up the second half after coming on as a substitute, first provinding an assist for Youssef En-Nesyri for the fourth goal before scoring a superb one of his own, pulling out some sensational skills to jink way past several defenders before firing into the top corner for the Atlas Lions' fifth.
Morocco remains top of Group B with Gabon second and Lesotho and Central African Republic in third and fourth respectively, unable to catch the top two.
