Cape Verde misses finals after Egypt draw
Cape Verde's hopes of qualifying for the finals of the Africa Cup of Nations were ended after a 1-1 draw with Egypt left it sitting third in Group C behind Botswana, which also drew 1-1 against Mauritania earlier in the day.
Egypt was the favourite for this match, despite playing away from home, and went ahead through Taher Mohamed in the 31st minute after he glided into the box and unleashed an unstoppable shot high into the net.
The Pharaohs had not conceded a single goal in qualifying, but that all changed not long after the hour mark when the Blue Sharks' record goalscorer Ryan Mendes scored from the spot after a clumsy challenge from Mohamed Saber saw the referee award a penalty.
But the hosts could not force a winner, and the final whistle brought with it the end of all hopes of qualifying for the big dance in Morocco next year.
