Deportivo Alaves 0-1 Girona: Solis snatches late win
Despite a less-than-stellar performance, Girona managed to grind out a win, scoring with their only shot on target against Deportivo Alaves.
Jhon Solis struck a 91st-minute winner to snatch an underwhelming Girona a 1-0 victory over Deportivo Alaves on Saturday.
Girona were bright in the first half, dominating the ball, though they offered little in terms of threat, with Arnaut Danjuma coming closest in stoppage time, hitting the side netting.
Alaves, who are still searching for their first win under Eduardo Coudet, improved as the game went on, though, like their opponents, they lacked a finishing touch.
The hosts may feel aggrieved that they did not get a penalty after a push by Arnau Martinez on Tomas Conechny in the box, but no VAR intervention came.
Alaves' misery was then compounded in the first minute of stoppage time as Solis pounced on a mistake from Moussa Diarra to net the winner.
Girona moved up to seventh in LaLiga, leapfrogging Real Sociedad, who do not play until Monday, while Alaves remain 16th, just two points above the drop zone.
Data Debrief: Bang on target
It was far from a classic at the Estadio de Mendizorroza on Saturday, but Girona will not care as they got the job done.
Michel's side were outplayed, managing just three shots in total, with Solis' goal their sole effort on target, as they accumulated 0.56 expected goals (xG). Alaves, meanwhile, had 11 shots worth 1.68 xG but failed to beat Paulo Gazzaniga.
Girona have now won back-to-back LaLiga wins while keeping a clean sheet for the first time since August-September, while Michel extended his personal record against Alaves - he is now unbeaten in his last five top-flight matches against them (W4 D1).
