Van Nistelrooy sure relegation battle will go to the wire as Leicester win at Spurs
Leicester City escaped the Premier League's bottom three by upsetting Tottenham, earning Ruud van Nistelrooy a much-needed three points.
Ruud van Nistelrooy is convinced Leicester City's fight to avoid relegation from the Premier League will go to the wire, after they ended a seven-game losing run by beating Tottenham.
Jamie Vardy and Bilal El Khannouss scored in the opening five minutes of the second half at the Tottenham Hotspur Stadium, as Leicester fought back for a memorable 2-1 win.
Another defeat, which appeared to be on the cards when Richarlison opened the scoring in the first half, would have seen Leicester equal their longest ever losing run in league action, having suffered eight straight Premier League defeats in 2001.
Instead, Leicester climbed out of the relegation zone to go 17th, one point clear of fellow strugglers Ipswich Town and Wolves.
Van Nistelrooy, who was just the fourth Premier League manager to suffer seven straight losses within his first 10 games with a club, hailed the Foxes' mentality after the win.
"In the end it was a dramatic 10 minutes where we had to survive, players were putting their heads in to block shots and were winning tackles," he told BBC Match of the Day.
"The winning feeling we shared in the dressing room together, the football we tried to play, the goals we scored...
"They wanted this, we needed it, and they lived up to it today. This team stuck together and is doing everything they possibly can to succeed."
Prior to Sunday's victory, the Opta supercomputer gave Leicester an 81.8% chance of relegation, making them second favourites behind Southampton (99.9%).
"There is, of course, relief and celebration in the dressing room," Van Nistelrooy said.
"We were really looking for this moment and it took a long time, so now we can enjoy this for a day or two, then it is back to work.
"As I said on my arrival, this will go right to the end."
Van Nistelrooy also revealed Leicester are working to strengthen their squad further in the January transfer window, having signed full-back Woyo Coulibaly from Parma last week.
"We are looking to strengthen the team within the possibilities of the club. The focus is on this team," the former Manchester United striker said.
