Postecoglou proud of Tottenham despite 'painful' defeat to Liverpool
Ange Postecoglou said he is proud of how Tottenham played despite a 6-3 defeat to Premier League leaders Liverpool on Sunday.
Tottenham boss Ange Postecoglou took the positives from Sunday's thrilling 6-3 defeat to Liverpool.
Mohamed Salah and Luis Diaz scored two goals each while Alexis Mac Allister and Dominik Szoboszlai were also on the scoresheet for Arne Slot's side, who increased their lead at the top of the Premier League to four points with a game in hand on their title rivals, with Chelsea having drawn at Everton earlier in the day.
Meanwhile, Spurs, who scored through James Maddison, Dejan Kulusevski and Dominic Solanke, are in 11th place, having only collected one win in their last four matches.
"It was a difficult day for us and a painful result. Credit to Liverpool, they are a very good side in a great moment. They are very settled and have great belief," Postecoglou told Sky Sports after the defeat.
"It was a bridge too far for us. We were lacking a bit of energy and the ability to compete with them at the same level."
Tottenham are eight points behind fourth-placed Nottingham Forest, who they face on Boxing Day, after 17 matches.
"I don't know how far we are from Liverpool. We are still growing as a team. We are 18 months into growing as a team," the Spurs boss said.
"We've had some challenges with the availability of players so it is hard to see where we are at. I'm really proud of the way the players played."
Spurs have conceded 31 goals at home in the league in 2024, which is the most goals they have shipped in a single calendar year since 2007, when they let in 34.
Sunday's result was also just the second time they conceded six goals at home in the Premier League, after a 6-1 defeat to Chelsea in 1997.
Asked whether the pressure is mounting on him, Postecoglou said: "I am not sure what you mean by pressure. I'm not happy with where we are. I think people are judging me, they're not throwing platitudes at me. That's fair enough."
"I can only navigate us through a difficult period and get to a position where, hopefully, we have a healthier squad and improve our position on the table.
"If you’re saying 10th is not a good position and I should maybe be uncomfortable, that is for others to judge."
