Postecoglou convinced Tottenham players doing everything to end poor run
Ange Postecoglou says he cannot ask for anything more from his Tottenham players, despite them going seven league games without a win.
Under-pressure Tottenham boss Ange Postecoglou is convinced his players are giving everything to end their dreadful run of form, and is sure their results will turn soon.
Tottenham's terrible season reached a new nadir on Sunday as they slipped to a 2-1 home defeat to Leicester City, despite having gone ahead through Richarlison's first-half header.
Jamie Vardy and Bilal El Khannouss struck as Tottenham conceded two goals in the first five minutes of the second half for the first time in any game since a November 1997 defeat to Liverpool.
Spurs have now gone seven Premier League games without a victory, suffering six defeats and playing out a 2-2 draw with struggling Wolves in that span.
It is their longest winless run in the top flight since 2008, with injuries to Guglielmo Vicario, Destiny Udogie, Cristian Romero, Micky van de Ven, Brennan Johnson, James Maddison, Timo Werner and Dominic Solanke leaving them depleted.
But, after Tottenham's 13th league loss this season - the same amount as 19th-placed Ipswich Town - Postecoglou refused to criticise his players.
"It hurts a lot. The players gave everything again," he told Premier League Productions. "We are going to look at a lot of things, but in terms of effort, I can't ask any more of this group. Things just didn't go our way.
"We created some good opportunities and, unfortunately, things just didn't drop for us - not because the players weren't trying, and that's the main thing.
"The players are giving everything they can. That is all we can ask for as a football club, and me as a manager. They are trying their hardest and that is all anyone can ask for.
"When you're in this situation, they are trying as hard as they can and, sometimes, that doesn't give you the clarity in decision-making."
Tottenham remain 15th in the table, eight points clear of the relegation zone and 16 adrift of the top seven.
They next go to Brentford before visiting Liverpool in the second leg of their EFL Cup semi-final tie, boasting a 1-0 lead from the first leg.
Postecoglou is certain they will get back to winning ways when they recover key players, saying: "All you can ask is for people to do as much as they can, and from my perspective, I see a group of players that are giving as much as they can. I know it will turn.
"We'll get some players back. We were short again today but, in the next couple of weeks, there are some really important players coming back that I know will help this group.
"We've not hit a ceiling. We've been going like this for two months. They put in an enormous performance on Thursday to make sure we're OK in Europe, and they had to back it up today, but there were probably at least two or three players that weren't 100%."
Chairman Daniel Levy was the target of dissenting chants throughout Sunday's game, while some sections of the home crowd jeered Postecoglou's decision to withdraw Richarlison in the 54th minute.
The result has left the former Celtic boss' position under scrutiny, and he knows he will be held responsible if things do not change.
"I'm a football manager and I get judged on results," he concluded. "That is the way of the world."
