Stuttgart 3-4 Bayer Leverkusen: Alonso's side halt losing run with dramatic late turnaround
Bayer Leverkusen closed the gap to Bundesliga leaders Bayern Munich after leaving it late to seal a huge win over Stuttgart on Sunday.
Bayer Leverkusen snatched a dramatic 4-3 victory over Stuttgart with two late goals to snap a three-game losing run across all competitions on Sunday.
Having trailed heading into the 88th minute, Angelo Stiller's own-goal levelled the contest before Patrik Schick settled the seven-goal thriller in second-half stoppage time.
The result sees Xabi Alonso's side close the gap at the Bundesliga summit to six points following Bayern Munich's 1-1 draw with Union Berlin on Saturday.
Ermedin Demirovic fired Stuttgart into a 14th-minute lead, the Bosnian the quickest to react to Nick Woltemade's strike that was saved by Lukas Hradecky.
The hosts doubled their advantage three minutes after the break through Woltemade, but Jeremie Frimpong pulled one back for Leverkusen after Stuttgart failed to clear their lines following a sustained spell of pressure by their opponents.
However, Stuttgart restored their two-goal lead just after the hour when Hradecky saved a Demirovic shot, only for the ball to bounce off Granit Xhaka and into his own net.
But Leverkusen hit back yet again when Piero Hincapie rifled into the roof of the net to give Alonso's side renewed hope of battling back in the contest.
And they did just that two minutes from time when Stiller stuck out a leg and deflected Victor Boniface's cross into the box beyond Alexander Nubel.
Schick then completed Leverkusen's thrilling late surge in the fourth minute of second-half stoppage time, brilliantly glancing Frimpong's teasing delivery home with a fine header to seal a huge victory.
Data Debrief: Comeback kings strike again
So often a feature in their title-winning season in 2023-24, Leverkusen rediscovered their late goal magic that delivered a first Bundesliga crown last year to keep their hopes of winning the league alive this time around.
Indeed, Leverkusen have won 12 points from losing positions in the Bundesliga this season, more than any other team, while Sunday's turnaround saw them emerge victorious in a match they trailed by two or more goals since their 5-2 triumph over Heidenheim back in November.
They also kept their magnificent run away from home going. Alonso's side are now unbeaten in each of their last 30 Bundesliga away games (W22 D8), with only Bayern managing more matches without defeat on the road (33 between April 2012 and March 2014).
