Freiburg 1-2 Bayern Munich: Kane helps visitors extend Bundesliga lead
A fifth straight league victory, combined with dropped points for rivals Bayer Leverkusen, saw Bayern Munich extend their advantage.
Harry Kane scored the opening goal as Bundesliga leaders Bayern Munich secured a nervous 2-1 victory at Freiburg to move six points clear at the top of the Bundesliga.
With champions Bayer Leverkusen held to a 2-2 draw at RB Leipzig, Vincent Kompany’s side were able to increase their advantage at the summit thanks to goals from Kane and defender Kim Min-jae.
Bayern, who are on 48 points, lost 3-0 to Feyenoord in the Champions League on Wednesday, but started well against Freiburg, hitting the post through Jamal Musiala.
Bundesliga top scorer Kane then put them in front after 15 minutes, making a quick turn on the edge of the box and sending a low drive into the net.
Kim headed in at the near post from a corner nine minutes after the restart to make it a two-goal advantage before Freiburg pulled a goal back in the 68th minute through Matthias Ginter's header.
Bayern were able to hold on for a fifth straight league victory – matching their best winning streak of the season – despite having only attempted seven shots, their lowest total in a top-flight match this season.
Freiburg have now lost three in a row and dropped to ninth in the standings, with this poor run coming after they had only been beaten twice in their eight previous Bundesliga games.
Data Debrief: Kane and Dier make history
With Eric Dier setting up Kane for the opener, the duo became the first English players to combine with each other for a goal in the Bundesliga since Opta records began in the 2004-05 season.
It's been a good start to the new year for Kane, with Bayern winning all four of their league matches in 2025 and the striker contributing three goals and an assist as part of that run.
His first-half strike took him up to 17 Bundesliga goals this season, with six of those strikes being all-important opening goals.
Kane also scored in September's reverse fixture against Freiburg, with that match being a 2-0 win.
And Bayern's latest triumph over Freiburg continues their dominance of this fixture, as they have now gone unbeaten in the last 18 league meetings, winning 14 of those.
