Borussia Monchengladbach 0-1 Bayern Munich: Kane penalty sends leaders four points clear
Bayern Munich got off to a winning start in 2025 but were made to work hard for the three points against Borussia Monchengladbach.
Harry Kane netted a 68th-minute penalty to give Bayern Munich a 1-0 victory at Borussia Monchengladbach in the Bundesliga on Saturday.
Having finished with a win before the winter break, Bayern were able to regain their four-point lead at the top of the table with the victory at Borussia Park.
Bayern had control of the game in the first half, with some 75% possession, but struggled to convert that into goals, despite going close through Thomas Muller and Leon Goretzka.
They finally got their breakthrough in the 68th minute though. Lukas Ullrich caught Michael Olise in the box to give away the spot-kick and Kane sent Moritz Nicolas the wrong way to break the deadlock, bagging his 15th league goal of the season.
Bayern had chances to make sure of the points after that. Both Alphonso Davies and Serge Gnabry forced impressive saves out of the Gladbach keeper in the closing stages, but they could not extend their lead.
Vincent Kompany's side are in top spot with 39 points after 16 games. Gladbach remain in 10th.
Data Debrief: Kane on the spot
Omar Marmoush's goal earlier on Saturday saw him move level with Kane at the top of the Bundesliga scoring charts, but the England international pulled clear once more.
His 15th goal of the campaign proved vital to earn a win when, for large parts of the game, Bayern struggled to find a way in behind Gladbach.
Kompany will probably feel his team should have had more to show for their performance. They had 23 shots, with 10 of those on target, as they accumulated 3.27 expected goals (xG).
Gladbach, on the other hand, did not test Manuel Neuer with any of their five attempts. Their heroic defending kept them in the game, but in the end, they did not have enough in the final third to earn a point.
