Simeone Focuses on Copa del Rey, Not on Praise or Criticism
Diego Simeone, head coach of Atlético Madrid, stated that he does not live "off praise or criticism," emphasizing that he knows the value he holds as a coach and is "very happy" at the club. He also highlighted the commitment of the team's veteran players, such as Koke, César Azpilicueta, Axel Witsel, and Antoine Griezmann, who maintain the competitive spirit of debutants.
The Argentine, who has been at the helm of Atlético for over a decade, expressed his satisfaction with having dedicated players: "When you have outstanding professionals, it's invaluable for coaches," he said. He also stressed the importance of being honest with players about their role in the team, especially those who haven't been regular starters, like Witsel, Azpilicueta, and Sorloth.
Regarding Norwegian forward Alexander Sorloth, the team’s top scorer in La Liga, Simeone praised his professionalism and ability to contribute either from the bench or as a starter. "He’s giving everything we expect from him, and we always want more," he said. He also pointed out that the quality of minutes on the field is more important than the total playing time.
Ahead of the Copa del Rey match against Elche, Simeone praised the opponent as a team in excellent form. "We know they’ve gone ten games without defeat, full of confidence and playing very good offensive football," he warned. Although he didn’t confirm whether he will rotate players, he assured that he will field those who can meet the team’s objectives at the Martínez Valero.
The coach also discussed the absence of Clément Lenglet, a key player in Atlético’s 14-match winning streak. Simeone praised the French center-back, calling him noble, hardworking, and aware of his strengths and weaknesses, which has allowed him to solidify his place in the team after a challenging start.
