A Historic Match for Venezuela
Venezuela defeated Mexico in a match that will go down in the history of the South American country and the Copa América.
Venezuela beat Mexico 1-0 in the second group stage match of Group B at the 2024 Copa América, in a historic game played at one of the most iconic stadiums in the U.S., the SoFi Stadium in Los Angeles.
After the final whistle blew, a piece of history was made for Venezuela, its players, and the Copa América. This was the first time Venezuela has ever defeated Mexico in a non-friendly match. Just like in 2016, they have won their first two group stage matches and are officially through to the quarterfinals.
Additionally, Venezuela's starting goalkeeper, Rafael Romo, made history by becoming the first Venezuelan goalkeeper to save a penalty in Copa América history. Romo saved Orbelín Pineda's penalty in the 87th minute.
Salomón Rondón continues to be a natural goal scorer, having netted 42 goals in his 106 appearances for the South American team. He is also the first Venezuelan player to score in four different Copa América editions (2011, 2015, 2016, and 2024).
Rondón is now the second-highest scorer for “La Vinotinto” in Copa América history with five goals, only behind José Luis Dolguetta with six. At 34 years and 248 days old, Rondón also became the oldest Venezuelan goal scorer in Copa América history.
Without a doubt, this match will be historic in many ways, especially for Venezuela, which has made a strong statement and confirmed its determination to fight to the end and continue making history during the 2024 Copa América in the United States.
