CONMEBOL announced Lima as host city for the 2025 Copa Libertadores Final
Lima will host the Copa Libertadores final on November 29, as announced on Monday by Peru’s head of state, Dina Boluarte, after her meeting with the president of the South American Football Confederation (CONMEBOL), Alejandro Domínguez, at the Government Palace.
A special return for Peru’s capital
"Lima will host the 2025 CONMEBOL Copa Libertadores Final. The event will take place on November 29 this year. This confirms our country as one of the most attractive sporting destinations on the continent," said Boluarte, without mentioning that the city is currently under a state of emergency due to security issues. She also assured that "the Government of Peru is committed to providing all the necessary guarantees for the event’s success."
It won't be the first time Lima hosts a Copa Libertadores final: back in 2019, the Estadio Monumental staged the clash between Flamengo and River Plate, with the Brazilian side winning 2-1. Because of that, Domínguez celebrated the return to the city and highlighted the positive economic impact the event had back then.
President Boluarte's key role
Meanwhile, Alejandro Domínguez admitted that Dina Boluarte’s personal involvement was key for CONMEBOL to pick Lima as the final’s host city. He said the city would experience "the biggest sports party South American football has to offer," which will be broadcast in 195 countries at the same time, potentially reaching 5 billion people. "I have no doubt that the people of Lima and all of Peru are up to the challenge," he added.
Although the stadium for the final hasn’t been officially decided yet, expectations for the economic impact are high. In 2019, Lima pulled in around 60 million dollars, while last year’s final in Buenos Aires generated about 80 million.
